HISTORY OF THE NOTTINGHAMSHIRE FLAG The people of Nottingham created the Nottinghamshire flag as part of a competition run by BBC Radio Nottingham. The response to the competition was extremely positive with countless flag submissions and thousands of votes to choose the winner in an online poll. The flag that was chosen by the people now flies high as the official Nottinghamshire flag. The design of the flag features a green background with a red cross and, within the centre of the flag, a white shield with a green Robin Hood inspired by the statue outside Nottingham Castle. Many businesses in Nottinghamshire have used Robin Hood in designs, and it was readily embraced by the people to be part of the flag. The green background signifies the green fields and forestry that is characteristic of Nottinghamshire.
